(Washington, D.C.) – Representative Larry Bucshon, M.D. will hold a hearing on Wednesday, September 18th at 10:00am EDT titled “Methamphetamine Addiction: Using Science to Explore Solutions.”  The hearing will investigate methamphetamine (meth) addiction causes, prevention, and treatment.

Bucshon, Chairman of the House Subcommittee on Research and Technology, called the hearing to better understand meth addiction and hear from expert witnesses about the role of science and data in helping inform stakeholders on this issue.  Bucshon is also seeking input on possible solutions to this widespread problem – a problem that is prevalent in Southern Indiana, the area Bucshon represents in Congress.

Bucshon also invited Indiana State Police Meth Suppression Section Commander, First Sergeant Niki Crawford to provide testimony to the committee. First Sergeant Crawford will be one of four witnesses to testify before the committee.

The group is expected to give a general background to this growing problem and discuss the latest research on meth addiction, including prospective technologies to prevent large-scale unauthorized purchases of pseudoephedrine (PSE). The panel is also expected to discuss the latest social science research to inform both prevention and treatment for meth addiction.

During his time in Congress, Bucshon has been active and involved in discussions with local community and state officials on how Indiana can best address meth addiction.

Bucshon most recently joined Indiana Attorney Greg Zoeller, Mayor Lloyd Winnecke, and Mayor Duke Bennett in Evansville and Terre Haute to announce a new statewide public awareness campaign to prevent smurfing - the practice of hiring individuals to purchase PSE in multiple locations in order to exceed legal purchase limits.
