Rep. Larry Bucshon meets with Evansville Student Hayley Betz in Washington, DC to congratulate her on winning the Eight District Congressional Art Competition
A recent graduate from W.H. Harrison High School in Evansville traveled to Washington, D.C. on Wednesday after winning the Eighth District Congressional Art Competition hosted by Congressman Larry Bucshon. Hayley Betz met with Bucshon, visited her winning painting on display in the U.S. Capitol building, and attended a reception that honored students from across the country.
“Every year I’m amazed at the talent displayed by students throughout Southern Indiana and the Wabash Valley. The competition was tough this year with a lot of great artwork,” said Rep. Bucshon. “I’m proud to have Hayley represent the Eighth District in our nation’s Capitol and I look forward to seeing her painting every time I walk to the House floor. It is a great reminder that my work here in Washington, DC impacts the lives of Hoosiers back home.”
Each spring, Congress hosts a nationwide high school art competition with pieces from each district. Open to all high school students in the Eighth District, the competition recognizes and celebrates the extraordinary artistic talent of our nation’s youth. The Eighth District Competition is hosted by Congressman Larry Bucshon and the winning submission is selected by the Arts Council of Southern Indiana. The artwork of the overall winner from the Eighth District is displayed in the U.S. Capitol for one year alongside the other contest winners from across the country.
“The Parade,” painted by Betz, is an oil painting depicting a marching band in vibrant red and white uniforms playing trumpets. A photo of the painting can be found on Bucshon’s official Facebook page.
Bucshon announced that Betz would be taking her painting to our nation’s Capitol during a ceremony at the Arts Council of Southern Indiana in May where he also expressed his support of the local arts.
